Martin Patfield, the first artist signed by Park Avenue Records, is a 22 year-old musician who has developed a concept and style far beyond his years with his advanced understanding of the trumpet and jazz improvisation. Currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Trumpet Performance at the University of Arizona, Martin has earned his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science and is gaining acclaim as a talented and seasoned musician in the jazz community. Martin, born in London, England, moved to the United States with his family when he was four years old. At the age of five Martin was introduced to music, playing the violin and piano. During his classical training he realized his true desire was to one day play jazz like his older brother, Jeremy, and at the age of eight Martin made his switch to trumpet.
Martin continues to train as both
a classical and jazz trumpet player and excels as a “crossover” player.
Martin’s classical training has allowed him to
further develop his unique style and cultivate a competitive
edge as a musician. His influences include Chet Baker,
Miles Davis, Dave Douglas, and Blue Mitchell. While
his musical forte is Straight Ahead Jazz, Martin’s
abilities cover a wide range of styles including Latin,
Be-Bop, Traditional Jazz, “Avant-garde” Jazz,
and Funk.
Martin’s versatility has provided
opportunities to perform with some of the country’s
most established musicians, most notably Greg Armstrong,
Tom Ervin, Jon Faddis, Ed Freidland, Jeff Haskell,
Fred Hayes, Robin Horn, Tommy Newsome, Randy Sandke,
Ed Shaughnessy, and Mike Vax among others. Martin has
also played with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra on several
occasions.
Martin is recipient of numerous honors and awards including third place in the prestigious 2002 International Trumpet Guild Jazz Improvisation Competition. This competition, held in Manchester, England at the time, includes the finest up-and-coming young jazz trumpeters in the world.
He strives to gain as much experience possible from the great musicians who surround him while continuing to develop his own style as a professional performer. His self-titled album, Martin Patfield, has been released and is available through Park Avenue Records. Martin is now in the studio working on a new album. |
